Research on film audiences

Research on film audiences:
Thrillers have conventions that allow the film to appeal to a certain target audience. Most thrillers have aspects of suspense, excitement, tension, uncertainty and many more. In most thrillers they tend to have both bad and good characters, which in the end result in some kind of mission. Through thrillers we always see a main character who is usually the victim or 'bad guy' (villain), which then ends in the victim trying to escape from a serious endangered place. Most thrillers are shown to be intense and often play with the viewers minds in some cases them being confused who the victim is whilst they are also playing the villain. Thrillers tend to always have music that is high pitched or mostly quiet. The music of thrillers are crucial as it sets the mood and the tone of the film, having the genre of a thriller is significant as it lets the audience know what to expect and not to be surprised in what happens for example if we see a couple holding hands and happy romantic music is being played then we will expect there to be romance and a couple falling in love. However if we see a thriller and the music is quiet and tends to get louder when some one walks we will expect something to happen e.g. some one getting killed.
Some thrillers are aimed at audiences who are aged 15+ but mostly aimed at people who are 18+ as they contain a lot of violence and the viewers are able to understand the thriller more and not appropriate for people below this age. Some examples of psychological thrillers are listed below:

  • Leon 1994 (18+)
  • Taken 2008 (18+)
  • Seven 1995 (18+)
  • The Departed 2006 (18+)
  • Fight Club 1999 (18+)
  • City Of God 2002 (18+)
  • The Martix 1999 (15+)
  • The Last King Of Scotland 2006 (15+)
  • Blood Diamond 2006 (15+)
Overall thinking of the target audience is important as we see that people who watch the thrillers will need to understand what is happening and is mostly appropriate for the age of 18+
