Intertexuality

Intertextuality is a term used to describe visual referencing, not only in films, but also in music videos and television shows. Films use scenes and sound that have been used in other films, this engages the audience as they may recognise aspects of mise en scene, certain camera angles, sound or methods of editing that they have seen in other films. Examples of intertextuality in media texts are seen in the fim Shrek, which makes references to the idea of fairytales, and Scary movie which makes references to a range of horrors.

Psycho is a 1960 suspense horror film, it is a classic horror and one of the earliest, from which many ideas have been used in other films.
