Genre & Sub genre and audience / The Others and Friends with Benefits
Genre is a group or category that a film is shown to have. Types of genre include: Horror, Thriller,Rom com, Adventure, Drama, Chick Flick, Action, Animation and Sci- fi. Genre serves many purposes to the audience and film makers. The purpose that genre gives the audience is that it allows the audience to make and choose there experience. For film makers we see the purpose is to targets certain audiences, cash in on trends and make the process of filming an easier trend.
A Sub-genre is a genre within a genre types of sub genres include horror, crime, romantic, erotic, and political. Below i have chosen two types of genres which are thrillers and romance but also show to have two different sub genres within them which are horror and romance.
The Others
The genre of this film as shown throughout the poster is shown to be a thriller that has some aspects of a horror. The target audience of this film is shown to be aimed at people who are interested in super natural horrors, most people generate the target audience whilst looking at the poster and the conventions used such as mis en scene. Looking at this film poster the key signifiers are shown to be the colours, text and also the positioning of the images and text on the page. The colours of this film poster are shown to be based around blacks, dark browns, yellows and whites all giving both negative and positive associations. The colours are a key convention that allows viewers to generate not only what the story is about but also what could happen. The title of this poster is represented throughout the texts format as we see it is shown to be ghostly and separated from one another. Using the colours yellow allows it to stand out from the black background allowing us to see the name of the film. The lightening that is reflected upon the characters face allows the views to see where most of the action is taking place and who it is focused on most both in the poster and in the film.
Friends With Benefits
The genre of this film poster as identified is a comedy that has some aspects of romance. The target audience for this will be based around the age of 15+ as it looks bold, cheeky and also fun. There are many key signifiers shown on this film poster such as the layout, colour, font etc. The layout is a key signifier on this poster as it sets out a clear idea of what viewers should expect. The idea of the poster being split down the middle could give the representation of the two characters who have two split personalities who tend to get along well. The layout of the characters names are place above the characters image with nothing around them to show there significance within the film and show viewers they are well known. The title being represented vertically down the screen makes us see that it isn't the main focus. The colours that have been used on this poster are neutral colours such as light blues and browns these are shown to give the connotation of a calm poster of two very mature adults who tend to come across in the film often.
